Moving from Sheffield to Manchester: The Complete Route Guide

Sheffield to Manchester is one of the most popular long-distance routes we cover — a trans-Pennine move of 38–45 miles depending on route. It's not a motorway-only journey. The Pennines sit between the two cities, and your route choice matters depending on the time of year, the weather, and how much you're moving.

Route Options: M67 vs A57 Snake Pass

Route 1: M67 / A628 Woodhead Pass (Recommended Year-Round)

The most reliable route. Sheffield to the M67, then the A628 Woodhead Pass through Longdendale, joining the M67 to Manchester. This is the primary HGV-permitted route across the Pennines in this corridor. Distance: approximately 38 miles. Drive time: 50–70 minutes in normal traffic.

Why we recommend it: the A628 is wide enough for a Luton van, gritted in winter, and avoids the weight restrictions on the Snake Pass. For Luton van moves, this is the only sensible option.

Route 2: A57 Snake Pass (Summer/Scenic Only)

The famous Snake Pass through the Dark Peak. Longer (45 miles) and dramatically slower (90+ minutes on busy summer days), but genuinely beautiful. The A57 over Snake Pass has a 7.5-tonne weight limit — this rules out Luton vans. Transit and Sprinter vans are fine. We occasionally use this route for smaller moves on quiet weekdays in summer, but never in winter (it closes regularly in snow and ice) and never for tight schedules.

Route 3: M1 South / M6 (For South Manchester / Stockport)

For deliveries to south Manchester (Stockport, Cheadle, Sale, Altrincham), the M1 south to J29a, M69/M6 junction, and M56 west is actually competitive in distance. Not recommended for central Manchester or Salford — adds too much time. But worth considering if your Manchester address is south of the city centre.

Typical Costs: Sheffield to Manchester

  • Studio flat / single room (LWB van, 1 person): from £220
  • 1-bed flat (Sprinter): from £280
  • 2-bed flat (Sprinter + two-man): from £340
  • 3-bed house (Luton + two-man): from £420
  • 4-bed house (Luton + two-man, full day): from £550

These are fixed-price quotes — no mileage add-ons, no fuel surcharges, no waiting time charges for Manchester traffic.

Manchester-Side Access: What to Know

Manchester city centre has several access considerations that differ from Sheffield:

  • Manchester Clean Air Zone — as of 2023, Manchester operates a Clean Air Zone for non-compliant vans. All our vehicles meet Euro 6 standards and are CAZ-compliant. No extra charge applies.
  • Northern Quarter and City Centre — narrow Victorian streets similar to Sheffield's Kelham Island. Loading is typically on side streets; double-parking on Thomas Street or Oldham Street attracts warden attention quickly.
  • Salford Quays / Media City — modern apartment blocks with managed access, loading bays, and goods lifts. Generally easier than city centre terraces.
  • Ancoats — rapidly gentrifying area with older industrial-to-residential conversions. Loading access varies by building.
  • Didsbury / Chorlton / Withington — similar suburban terrace stock to Sheffield's S7. On-street parking, CPZ in some streets. Similar approach to Sheffield terrace moves.

Timing Your Sheffield to Manchester Move

Practical timing tips:

  • Avoid Monday and Friday peak hours on the M67 — the Tameside corridor into Manchester can queue significantly during rush hour. Aim to arrive in Manchester between 10 AM–3 PM or after 6 PM.
  • Winter moves — the Woodhead Pass (A628) is kept open in most weather, but the Snake Pass closes frequently from November to March. Book the M67 route and give yourself extra time.
  • University moves — both Sheffield and Manchester have large student populations, meaning late June and early September are peak moving months. Book well ahead for these periods.
